TelemetryDeck Winter Update 2025
To be honest, this status post begins with a deep sigh. Daniel and I are watching the news with great concern. Our hearts go out to the underrepresented, the neurodivergent folk, the LGBTQI+ community, the disabled, and the children. The lives of these people (us included) will not get easier as the current global trend towards the right gets stronger.
How are we doing, as founders and human beings?
What helps us in these times: we look out for each other. We treat each other with kindness and we are respectful towards our fellow human beings - in the office, in the queue at the supermarket checkout and towards our friends and neighbours. Fascism isolates people and destabilizes communities. We will not allow that. Strength lies in fellowship.
But activism costs time and energy. We run an ethically responsible company and fight against the tech giants, capitalism and time.
Unfortunately, our day only has 24 hours. In recent months, it has become increasingly clear that we can no longer work through everything that comes our way. We are unhappy that some of our customers are also affected by this. We have to radically prioritize and some Github tickets are left lying around for too long. That's stressful. For us and for you.
How’s the business doing?
One of our most important goals is reaching profitability with TelemetryDeck’s business. We narrowly missed this goal in 2024 because our expenses have increased and the processes with some corporate customers are taking longer than initially hoped. However, we have already acquired a few well-known larger companies as customers and will soon be able to name some more.
We have received a tiny round of bridge financing from our existing business angels. These are private individuals from the IT sector who support up-and-coming companies, lawyers who care about data protection and cool people who want to see more diverse companies in our economy. Thanks angels, you’re awesome!
With this additional capital, we can strengthen the existing team, which should directly benefit our customers.
How are our customers doing?
In the fall, I had personal conversations with some of our customers to better understand how you incorporate TelemetryDeck into your day-to-day work, what features are important to you and how we can help you make your apps successful. The most relevant results:
- You are a dedicated and warm group of people and we couldn't ask for better customers. I have only met friendly, helpful people in my meetings.
- What has convinced many of you of TelemetryDeck is the ultra-fast setup. That's why we are now emphasizing this much more clearly on our homepage.
- The emails with a weekly or monthly summary of the most important values for each app are important for many of you in order to maintain a continuous, rough overview. To be honest, we weren't even aware of this. We therefore want to improve these emails soon.
- For almost everyone I spoke to, user acquisition is a major challenge. We have therefore compiled your best strategies and extensive basic knowledge on this topic. You can download the playbook here.
- You mainly hear about us through recommendations from other developers. So word-of-mouth is our most important channel and at the same time we can't actively promote it ourselves. So if you would like to talk about TelemetryDeck or write a post about us, that would be super extra amazing and we’ll do our best to help you out by boosting your content and being there for any questions!
You have very specific ideas and requests for improvements and new features. We are making every effort to implement these step by step and we will continue to accept your feedback. This allows us to continuously adapt our roadmap to your needs.
I will continue with these 1:1 meetings in the future and will send out invitations from time to time.
How’s the product doing?
Many of you have reached out to us about issues, loading times, and performance in recent months. We had hoped that our server move last summer would magically fix all of this, but, alas, it did now. But we’ve been working diligently, chipping away at each individual performance bottleneck, and according to our stats performance across TelemetryDeck’s query servers is pretty decent now, even though we have a few more items on the roadmap regarding performance down the line, especially a feature we’re going to call “namespaces” that will allow us to shard individual organizations on different calculation servers and clusters.
We’ve done extensive work on our SDks for all platforms by introducing a lot of new default parameters extracting valuable data for you without having to lift a finger. The SDKs support new technologies, and we’re making sure that SDKs for all platform support the same sets of features so you can more easily compare data from e.g. Android, iOS or Flutter.
Most of our development time has been tied up in these areas, leaving less time than usual for improvements in visible frontend features or the user interface. We’ve received many messages with issues, bugs, and improvement suggestions and have taken note of them all and sometimes replied with clarifying questions. Please understand that we cannot answer every single email, but we love hearing from you nonetheless and your feedback is an important part in deciding how we structure our roadmap.
We’re also this 👌 close to finally introducing our new pricing model, which is going to be volume-based. You’ll never again have to figure out in advance which package you’re going to need, instead you’ll only pay for the exact number of events you’ve sent us. You can still pre-pay to save a bit of money and avoid fluctuations, and we’re going to make that more flexible as well. We’ll also restrict the free plan somewhat. The move over is going to happen gradually for new signups, and users with existing subscriptions can stay in these as long as they like before deciding to make the switch. We think this pricing model fits way better with how our customers are using TelemetryDeck and are really looking forward to your feedback on this.
What else has been happening?
We won first place in the Data, Privacy and Security category at the Corporate Digital Responsibility Awards. From day one, we have aligned our corporate actions with our personal values and convictions and to this day we continue to take the time to question and adapt individual topics and decisions. The recognition for this is a great reward. Daniel accepted the award in Berlin and when we met at the train station, I was finally able to hold the trophy in my hands.
I, Lisa, was honored by the city of Augsburg as Tech Pioneer of the Year 2024 and had a fantastic evening at the award ceremony, to which I was exceptionally able to take not only my co-founder Daniel but also my husband Christoph (thanks, mother-in-law, for babysitting).
I was also reappointed to the Digital Council (Digitalrat) of the City of Augsburg. This is an honorary position in which experts from business, education, culture and representatives of certain interest groups discuss the topic of digitalization and then make recommendations to the city. In this way, knowledge is pooled in the city and passed on directly to those responsible. I am very proud to be a member of the Digital Council again in its second term of office.
